Ukweli is the Swahili word for truth. Join Herb Frazier, co-editor of Ukweli: Searching for Healing Truth, as he discusses this powerful anthology featuring essays and poems from 47 poets and writers. The collection offers personal accounts and insights designed to educate White Americans about the systematic racial bias that has hindered African American progress.
Ukweli explores the ongoing struggles Black people have faced despite their significant contributions to America. It presents personal truths learned about race relations in this country to show a part of American history often overlooked or misunderstood and calls for a national reckoning, urging America to embark on a healing pathway to address the lasting trauma of slavery and the enduring legacy of racial hostility.
This book was inspired by a poetry, lecture and dialogue series of the same name organized by poet Horace Mungin in 2020 at McLeod Plantation in Charleston, SC.
Books will be available for purchase and signing after the presentation.
This program is sponsored by South Carolina Humanities, a state program of the National Endowment for the Humanities; inspiring, engaging and enriching South Carolinians with programs on literature, history, culture and heritage.
