Local History Talks - "The First 100 Years of Anderson University" with Dr. Joyce Wood

Join former Anderson University professor, author, and local historian, Dr. Joyce Wood, as she discusses "The First 100 Years of Anderson University".

Anderson University has its roots in the early settlement of upstate South Carolina. The people who came to this area were individuals of deep faith who believed in the necessity for education for women as well as for men.  Under the leadership of Rev. William B. Johnson, one of the earliest institutions of higher education for women in this region was founded in the community of Anderson in 1848. Known as the Johnson Female Seminary, it later was expanded as the Johnson Female University 1852-1863.  The interest in providing educational opportunities continued to flourish despite the vicissitudes of war, economic uncertainty and change. In 1911, a community effort created Anderson College which has become the thriving University we see today.

This presentation will review some of the main events and personalities involved in that process.
