History of the Branch

A free public library in the town of Honea Path became reality in 1907 with a $5,000 gift from Andrew Carnegie and the formation of the Honea Path Library Association. The Carnegie Library, the smallest such library in South Carolina, opened its doors on February 5, 1908. The library grew slowly until in 1958 it became a branch of the Anderson County Library System. At that time, the name of the library was changed to the Jennie Erwin Branch Library in honor of Miss Jennie Erwin who was instrumental in obtaining the aid from Mr. Carnegie as well as donating $1000 for the purchase of first books. The current Honea Path Library Association Trustees are: Phil Ashley; Cheryl Hughes; Shay Jenkins; Dr. Tommy Martin; Kathy McCullough; Jim Pinson, President; Al Young.
